Every book has thousands of authors. Among those who had a special hand in this one, I want to thank Mom and Dad, who took such deep satisfaction and pleasure from encouraging their kids to explore the Intelligence River; Carol, my wife, for filling my adulthood with a marvelous model of intelligence — and so much more; and my sons, Paul and Andy, for letting me practice the ideas in this book on them before they had a choice and before I knew I had the ideas. I can never fully acknowledge the deep influence of Adell Bull Phillips, “Nana,” and Fannie Moorhead, my two favorite storytellers, who taught me that truth lies deeper than facts. “Se non é vero, é ben trovato.” The theorists whose research and thinking I’ll present gave the book its overall structure. Their influence was moulded by Rick Price, Jacques Rieux, Jon Thiem, and other hiking companions who patiently listened to my ramblings about intelligence when they could have been rambling undisturbed in the glory of the Rockies. Thanks to Beth Doll and Jacques Rieux, for a critical reading which completely reshaped the book; to Margaret (Susan) Fisher Cutter, my editor and friend, for helping transform my ideas into this tangible volume, and for her dedicated readings and rereadings, which gave it impetus, shape — and correct grammar; to my niece, Tana Cadena, for her illustrations and contributions to the early design of the book; my nephew, David Cadena, for his insights into multiple intelligences, and my sister Kathleen Cantrell, of The Erie Book Store, for all those discounts! Support independent booksellers! John Paul Lumpp designed the book, contributed many illustrations, and then carried the project through production. His friendship, energy, and creativity sustained me. Many thanks to Hank Cross, advisor, mentor, and friend; to my clients over the years, for patiently helping me to understand; to my partners — Raina Denmark, Gary Faris, Francis Gaebler, and Tom Linnell — for showing me what psychology can be at its best; and to my friends and colleagues in Peak Potential — Barb Benjamin, Marilyn Jones, and Mark Keller. What a good partnership, these many years! |
